First day US Open Serena Williams
The crowd at Flushing Meadwos celebrated 27 years of Serena
Williams' career ahead of the 40-year-old's retirement. However, Serena did not
want to rush to leave the competition by qualifying for the second round.
NEW YORK, MONDAY - The largest tennis stadium in the world,
Arthur Ashe Stadium, at the Billie Jean King US National Tennis Center, New
York, United States, is truly the stage for Serena Williams. Tennis fans,
especially those at the stadium on Monday (29/8/2022) evening local time,
celebrated 27 years of Serena's journey in the professional tennis arena.
Grand Slam organizing committeeUThe S Open prepared
everything, although the first round against Danka Kovinic was not Serena's
last match. Serena still has to appear with her sister, Venus Williams, in the
women's doubles which starts Wednesday. They are reuniting for the first time
on the court, since 2018, after the US Tennis Association (USTA) gave themwild
cardto appear in the women's doubles.
However, Serena gets a special celebration at the start. The
committee made a video about his success inUS Open narrated by celebrity, Queen
Latifah. The video played just before Serena stepped onto the pitch until
Kovinic, who was called up first, had to wait a while in his seat.
In addition to preparing for the match (she practiced a lot
from near the net in her prep period), Serena prepared her performance. Earned
the nickname "The Queen", what she wears makes her look like a queen
who leads a kingdom.
Serena, who loves fashion and dares to be different, wore a black long-sleeved dress with a tutu on the skirt. There are six layers on this skirt to symbolize Serena's six titles fromUS Open. The top of his shirt is equipped with a vest. Nike, the sponsor, said the model was inspired by the clothes worn by athletesfigure skating(ice skating).
Crystal makes clothes, bags, headbands, and hair shiny. On a
pair of shoes, there are even 400 diamonds that came from her jewelry company,
Serena Jewelery. The addition of a long see-through skirt, also with a
sprinkling of crystals, on the back makes her look like a queen.
Her daughter, Olympia, 5, was dressed in a similar fashion,
also with glittering crystals. Her hair is braided into small sections with
beads, samelike when Serena wonUS Open 1999 at the age of 17. The achievement
became the opening title of his 23 Grand Slam titles.
Former president present
Tennis legends, tennis legends, celebrities, to former
president Bill Clinton were part of the 23,000 spectators who filled the
stands. In addition, there are Cori Gauff, Mike and Bob Bryan, Martina
Navratilova who is next door to Mike Tyson, and Queen Latifah.
Vogue Magazine Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour was even in the
stands of Serena's team. Vogue is the fashion magazine that first published
Serena's retirement plan, through a story she wrote and went online on August
9.
Although the atmosphere has been made as a moment of farewell,
Serena apparently does not want to rush to leave the competition. His body
language and way of playing show his great ambition to win. His performance was
better than when he played at Wimbledon and lost in the first round to
Frenchman Harmony Tan in a tight match, 5-7, 6-1, 6-7 (7).
Serena can still show her hard hitting, especially from the
serve, to be able to make nine aces. He also played more aggressively, than at
Wimbledon, by attacking close to the net. His serve and volleyball also
produced several timeswinner.
Excellent, I love it. Thank you Keep supporting me while I'm still playing here. The audience support is amazing and that helps me,. (Serena Williams)
However, the athlete who will turn 41 on September 26, still
has a lot to dounforced error. He got frustrated when he made fivedouble
faultin the first set. In total, Serena made six double faults during the
serve.
His attempts to put the ball into a corner or the sidelines
also often made the ball fall off the field in the first set. However, he
played more accurately in the second set.
"In any moment, I always try to play my best. That's what
I did today too," said Serena.
Serena took the lead, 2-0, when she broke Kovinic's serve in
the second game. After that, the two players, who met for the first time,
"stealed" each other's service until the score was 3-3. After taking
Kovinic's serve in the eighth game, Serena got the win when she held serve in
the next game. Serena wins first set after thwarting fourbreak pointKovinic,
two of them through aces in a row.
Serena's lead in the second set was determined by Kovinic's
serve, which she broke in the fifth game to put her 3-2 up, then in the ninth
game when the ball frombackhandKovinic didn't cross the net. Serena also
celebrated her first Grand Slam win since advancing to the fourth round of the
2021 French Open, running on the spot smiling.
Second seed challenged
Although the run is still on and it will be against the second
seed, Anett Kontaveit, in the second round, the celebrations for Serena took
place again after the match. TV presenter Gayle King invited tennis legend
Billis Jean King to share his views on Serena.
“You are fearless and don't like to lose. You are also not
afraid to dream big. Thank you for what you do for women. Thank you for sharing
your journey with all of us. You know, your journey is just beginning,"
King said of Serena.
After that, the video clips were re-aired with the narration
read by Oprah Winfrey. Serena's face looks cheerful when watching the show,
especially with her mother, husband, and daughter, who go down to the side of
the field.
The audience was even included on the stage for Serena. They
held up colorful paper which finally showed the words “We Love Serena”.
“Excellent, I love it. Thank you Keep supporting me while I'm
still playing here. The audience support is amazing and that helps me,"
said Serena.
Serena's moment became the main moment on the opening day to
close the surprise in two matches. Two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep
was knocked out after losing to world number 124 Ukraine's Daria Snigur 2-6
6-0, 4-6. The fourth seed in men's singles, Stefanos Tsitsipas, too, lost 0-6,
1-6, 6-3, 5-7 against Daniel Elahi Galan (Columbia).
Snigur and Galan are both debutants at the US Open. This is
the first time Snigur has appeared in a Grand Slam competition.
